About Us

The High Country ABC Store, the first in the state to successfully merge three separate systems into one, has served the towns of Banner Elk, Sugar Mountain and Seven Devils since 1998.
The High Country ABC Board provides the controlled sale of alcoholic beverages for our community in a modern, customer-friendly store conveniently located at the Grandfather Village Shopping Center near the intersection of Highways 105 and 184 at Tynecastle. The store serves individual customers and liquor-by-the-drink establishments in our immediate area.
ABC stores in North Carolina are not state owned or operated, but are maintained in individual communities with governing board members appointed by local town or county councils. Although a large portion of sales revenue is returned to the state in the form of taxes, each ABC board also distributes a significant amount of funds, generated through sales, to their local governing bodies. During the past fiscal year, $260,000 of our profits supported local law enforcement, alcohol education programs and direct distributions to each of the three towns to support their individually determined budget needs.
