About Us

The Woolly Worm Festival, held each October in Banner Elk, North Carolina, is a lively celebration centered around the fascinating woolly worm, or woolly bear caterpillar. This unique event, which attracts around 20,000 visitors annually, features exciting woolly worm races where caterpillars climb strings for a chance to win a $1,000 grand prize and the honor of forecasting the winter weather. The festival also includes a variety of activities such as local crafts, food vendors, live music, and family-friendly entertainment. Founded by Jim Morton in 1978, the festival has grown from a local curiosity into a major community event, with all proceeds benefiting local schools, children’s programs, and tourism initiatives in Avery County. With its blend of folklore, fun, and community spirit, the Woolly Worm Festival offers a delightful and memorable experience for all who attend.
